How much time is needed to prepare for CAT for a working professional?

Hello, my name is Vibhu Mittal and I am working at managerial level in my organization. I want to appear for CAT this year. Could you please help me know how many hours a day should I devote to my preparation for MBA CAT exam? Also, please suggest what is the right time to start the preparation?

Hello Vibhu. Doing MBA is very significant for working professionals as it increases their market value as a professional. Well, it is already July end so I would suggest you to start preparing now. There are many weekend coaching classes offered by lot of institutes that are in to CAT preparation. You can join one of them right now.

Talking about the number of hours to be devoted, I understand that when you are working you cannot give whole day for studying except the weekends. Hence, sparing 3 Ė 4 hours on weekdays should do the trick for you. You should jot down the topics you think need work from you. Smart study can definitely help you in your situation and you can surely emerge as a winner. All the best!

    hi

time is needed to prepare for CAT for a working professional
"..its not how long you prepare..its all about how well you prepare."
    i agree with this..
    For DI & Quant
we must have all concepts clear...
so going through BRM(its good for basics) is one sol.
    and other material...
    For english -"READ READ READ..."
    share few things:
RC:Read some editorials or grab some old ims test papers frm somebody & start solving RC's & then analyze them..Solve all types of RC no matter whether u find it intersting or not.I have seen very peculiar things about RC is that in exam the RC's which are easier to read have indirect questions while the difficult ones have easy questions. So read read read..
VA:Vocab is the key & so is grammer..have Wren & Martin grammer book it helps...For quick vocab just go through high frequency word in GRE Barrons book it helps & yes read a lot if u can ...
DI/LR: take some previous years mock cats from any institute (preferably TIME) & solve because they contain almost all types of LR/DI problems. The key is the next time u see a question at least u should be familiar with the concept & that can come only by prcatice..

    good luck

CAT type exam need quality time not quantity time.
Since you are a working professional, it would be better to join some coaching which you can do on weekends.
English & communication skills need much focus. If possible take 5-6 months leave.

Or another option for you is IIM Distance Learning Program which is designed specially for people like you , it is one yr program that costs around 5L. This program is offered at only three IIMs viz Khozikode, calcutta & Banglore.

    Hello Vibhu Mittal,
You being a Working Professional you cannot spend more time everyday for preparation. And so i would suggest you to take up CAT next year because CAT'11 is very close and you do not have much time to prepare. So start your preparations from now on for CAT'12 which could help you score well. You can spend one hour daily initially for CAT preparation and later from Jul/Aug spend 3-4 hours for preparation. This way of preparations can definitely help you to score good marks.

    All the best

    Dear friend

i will say if your English is good than six months with 5 hours study will enough for CAT exam.

if your English is not good than it will take more time to prepare for the CAT exam.

if your English is not good than go for improving this because this is the most important factor to clear CAT exam.

otherwise 6 months for hard work to clear CAT exam.

thank you for asking the question

Consideing that CAT has no fixed syllabus there can be no end to preparation.CAT calls for smartwork and not hardwork. With the right strategy and clarity of concepts you can easily crack CAT.Revise the basic fundamentals of quant topics in a planned manner. There is merit in going through previous year papers as the questions you will face are likely to be similar.
Reading voraciously accross all topics like science, politics, economics, technology, philosophy will help you tremendously in your english section. You need to devote and channelise whatever little time you have in writing mock tests. Then you should work on the solutions as it is equally important to determine your high speed high accuracy areas. Then adequate steps need to be taken for overcoming weaknesses if any.

    hello dear,
I think to score good in MBA exams you must join a coaching classes because as u say you are also doing a job.you can attend the coaching classes on weekends and it will really help you because most of the MNC companies have saturday and sunday off so you can utilise this time and can study hard at weekends and coaching can give you a direction because you are a working guy you dont have much time to self study daily so i think this will be the best option for you.

    Hi Vibhu,
Study is not a thing which you give as much as time and you learnt it. It always depends on the strength, knowledge & will power of the candidates. all the students may not apply for the same guideline for preparation of any exam whatever it is CAT, MAT or annual exam of you college. so its better to make you plan yourself, I just can tell you what I do if were at your place I ma not very good in verbal & reasoning so I take around 3-4 hours daily for that and around 1.5 hour daily for rest of the section. so you know your strong & weak point make your plan acoording to you to take help to your teachers & all to help you for that.
I am sorry! if I am getting harsh with u
    All The very Best!

    Dear Vibhu,
I think you are absolutely aware of CAT exam and its pattern. This is the tough most exam conducted to join any of the IIMs of india. As you are working for an organization, i think you will not get sufficient time to learn the details about CAT with possible questions through any coaching center like IMS . so i will suggest you to go through these following books for a better preparation for CAT exam.

Re: How much time is needed to prepare for CAT for a working professional?

As this year cat is marching quickly ,you need to practise harder but you are a working guy so it will be impossible for you to devote 10-12 hours a day to your preparation .So i would suggest you to devote atleast 3-4 hours a day with full concentration only and you should devote your full off working days on your cat preparation .But one thing is to be considered you should not let your health suffer for it so make a balance between two and take some rest at regular intervals, spend some time with your family also .
As a few days are left, you should really practise harder and score a good score so your hard work should not be go wasted.

Hello, Vibhu, , It is very tedious to cope up with the preparation of CAT along with Profession...but, it is not impossible.. you can do it... All You require is the considerable amount of time to be spent on the preparation... You can appear for the CAT next year... It requires consistent with full of commitment.... So, It is advisable that you may give atleast two hours a day to prepare for CAT. I think you must be aware regarding how to prepare..?? There is no need to mention it... You start your preparation from Day 1 to enhance your skills... Keep yourself ready now... It is the time to make something BIG... Best wishes, Regards,

    My Dear Friends,

If you want to seriously crack CAT examination than lots of hours required to works on studies and to solve study packages or practice papers.I think 6 hours daily is enough for preparation of this examination.

You can crack CAT examination through systematic preparation and consistency in works .You must have analytical and reasoning skills to approach or attempt any question asked in CAT examination. That is the way to crack common aptitude test.

For better visualization purpose you can also join coaching centre and list of them are following as :

    1) MBA-Circle coaching classes

    2) T.I.M.E.

    3) Career Launcher

The CAT paper consist of totally 150 marks and 120 minutes provided to solve 123 questions and paper will be divided into three sections .Under first section question will be based on Logical Reasoning and Data Sufficiency.

But in second section question will be on the basis of Quantitative Problems and last section questions in the form of Verbal Ability and through this section they want to check your verbal skills.

For more experience person 3 to 4 hours in whole day is enough or sufficient to crack CAT examination but for normal person 6 hours is mandatory for selection in Common Admission Test purpose.

For more information regarding preparation procedure and how to develop skills such type of query you can contact with your coaching faculty member or visit to the following website are :

    Regards
    Nikhil

Re: How much time is needed to prepare for CAT for a working professional?

    Hi friend,

Doing MBA is very significant for working professionals as it increases their market value as a professional. Well, it is already July end so I would suggest you to start preparing now. There are many weekend coaching classes offered by lot of institutes that are in to CAT preparation. You can join one of them right now.

Talking about the number of hours to be devoted, I understand that when you are working you cannot give whole day for studying except the weekends. Hence, sparing 3 – 4 hours on weekdays should do the trick for you. You should jot down the topics you think need work from you. Smart study can definitely help you in your situation and you can surely emerge as a winner.

    Regards

    Hi Vibhu,
I would like to tell you that thee is no such fixed formula of how many hours per day or how many days per week should be studied but yes on a sheer approximate basis it will be advisable if you can work upto 3-4 hours per day on a normal scale. Since you happen to be a working guy so weekends is the best time for you to utilize and exploit. Preparing for CAT requires maximum amount of practice and continuous touch with the subjects concerned. One thing more that i would like to tell is that your preparation should be focused and it is your work experience that will eventually be your USP. You can easily outperform your counterparts with the extra credits that you will receive for your work ex. But do ensure it has to be more than 1 year and if it is then you are all set and ready to bell the CAT. All the Best

    Hi Friend ,

    CAT Exam Preparation.

Stick to the Quantitative part for aptitude test .
Because every one is stronger in that part and that can cost you very much .
Verbal part is the key for every MBA Exam .
So , try to build vocab by different methods like ...audio , Flash cards etc .
Consistency is the key for preparation .

To judge your preparation you can also join coaching center to take Exam conducted by them .
